InstaLOD + Striking Distance Studios: Optimizing The Callisto Protocol’s Terrifying World

InstaLOD enabled Striking Distance Studios to optimize The Callisto Protocol, automating processes to ensure both detailed visuals and smooth performance.

The Callisto Protocol transports players to the chilling confines of Black Iron Prison on Jupiter’s icy moon, Callisto, delivering a survival horror experience defined by intricate details. Striking Distance Studios sought to create a deeply immersive and terrifying world, filled with complex environments and grotesque enemies. However, achieving this high level of visual fidelity presented a significant challenge: maintaining performance across different platforms. Manual optimization for a game of this scope would have been nearly impossible.

A new video from InstaLOD offers a behind-the-scenes look at how the development team at Striking Distance Studios tackled their optimization challenges. It highlights the critical role of InstaLOD, an essential optimization tool that handled the technical “heavy lifting.” InstaLOD automated the creation of Levels of Detail (LODs) as assets were imported, saving countless hours and ensuring consistent optimization. It also aided in generating clean light map UVs and, notably, Material Merging to bake textures and materials into atlases, achieving “massive performance savings” in dense scenes.

By automating these complex tasks, InstaLOD allowed the developers at Striking Distance to focus on creativity while ensuring the game met high performance standards. The video demonstrates how this powerful tool was pivotal in realizing The Callisto Protocol‘s ambitious and terrifying vision. Watch the video to learn more about their optimization process.
